What is Kangeiko?

Kangeiko (寒稽古) is Japanese for “mid-winter martial arts training.” Training during adverse conditions, when the world is cold and dark, encourages both an improvement in physical skills and discipline for the mind. Often, the greatest obstacle to going to the dojo to attend class arises there – in the mind. Kangeiko creates the expectation that you WILL go to class, and the resulting sense of accomplishment can provide clarity and bring new direction to your training.

  • All classes on the schedule are included in the Kangeiko registration.

  • Classes 1 and 2 are open to anyone who wishes to try a mind body art on a drop-in basis through the District of Clearwater’s registration portal (link coming soon).

  • Afternoon kids classes are intended for kids who are trying Aikido for the first time or are enrolled in BC youth programs. Regular Kangeiko participants interested in learning how to teach kids classes are invited to assist or observe. Alternatively, the afternoons can be used to explore the frozen waterfalls of Wells Gray Provincial Park.
